Hooptober 11 – Totally Killer

After the bleakness of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and with two horror comedies a requirement for Hooptober, we decided to try Totally Killer, a film that Prime has been shoving in my face for what feels like years.

Totally Killer

Murder is so 1987.

When the infamous “Sweet Sixteen Killer” returns 35 years after his first murder spree to claim another victim, 17-year-old Jamie accidentally travels back in time to 1987, determined to stop the killer before he can start.

Totally Killer is basically Scream meets Back to the Future – a light-hearted mix of sci-fi and slasher movie tropes.

I’m always extremely wary of comedies, and they rarely land well for me. Totally Killer‘s humour is mostly built around the differences between 2020s and 1980s sensibilities and as a Gen-Xer, it hit the mark more often than not.

And the rest of the film was a fun time-travel mystery wrapped up in a slasher movie package. Not something that I’d need to watch again, but it exceeded my, admittedly modest, expectations.

This one has drawn comparisons with The Final Girls, and that’s fair. I preferred Totally Killer, but its marginal. Happy Death Day also goes for a similar vibe, and that’s another film that I enjoyed.

So… maybe I’m more into comedy films than I thought.

Totally Killer gives us a horror comedy for Hooptober. Not a big win, but we’ll take it.
