My 2023 – Movies

I’m a real sucker for tracking things. Books I read, movies and TV shows, theatre trips, concerts… Everything gets logged somewhere.

So, when I discovered the movie tracking app, Letterboxd, it was a match made in movie heaven.

I’ve got seven years of movie viewing information logged that I’m slowly adding to the site, but this is what my 2023 looked like.

The so-close-to-100-it-hurts number of diary entries is a little bit misleading. There were at least 9 entries that weren’t movies. Otherwise I’d have snuck in another one before the year ended. My goal this year is to break the 100 mark.

Those highest rated films are a reasonable snapshot of the films I liked, both new and old. But there were some clear standouts.

Babylon is one of two films I watched twice (the other was Happy Death Day which got a second viewing because I thought my wife would enjoy it). Babylon isn’t going to be for everyone. It’s a long film for a start and there are some… intense scenes. But if you can make it to the title card then you should be fine. And the music’s great.

Saltburn is a thriller that is probably best watched without knowing much about it. Again, it’s not going to be everyone’s cup of movie magic but I loved it.

I went into Promising Young Woman knowing the ending which lessened it’s impact but it was still a highlight.

If you’re a horror fan then When Evil Lurks and Terrified are both what I would consider “real” horror films. Sometimes creepy, sometimes gory, sometimes shocking. Not for the fainthearted.

And for something more lighthearted, Bullet Train is a very stylistic action movie that I really enjoyed.

Letterboxd provides loads of data about your viewing habits which is like catnip for a datafiend like me.

The Themes and Nanogenres breakdown is particularly telling.

Yeah, I definitely have a type when it comes to movies.

There are loads more stats including things like which stuntperson I’ve seen most (Chris Palermo) and which films I’ve rated lower than average (Cocaine Bear being one notable example).
