Hooptober 11 – Men

This month, I’ve been taking part in the Letterboxd Hooptober challenge. The goal is to watch 31 horror films in October, including films that meet specific criteria such as “directed by Wes Craven” or starring a black woman.

I’m posting my thoughts on each of the movies here, as and when I get time.

Men

What haunts you will find you.

In the aftermath of a personal tragedy, Harper retreats alone to the beautiful English countryside, hoping to find a place to heal. But someone — or something — from the surrounding woods appears to be stalking her, and what begins as simmering dread becomes a fully-formed nightmare, inhabited by her darkest memories and fears.

Men is another movie that has been leering out at me from my recommendations for months, and I’ve been on the verge of watching it several times. It’s about to leave Prime which was just enough of a push for me to pick it for a Hooptober movie.

I went into it knowing very little (my preferred m.o. when it comes to movies), so, I didn’t expect such a strange, weirdly creepy little movie. Without giving too much away, director Alex Garland has really nailed the atmosphere in this one. It’s just a little bit unsettling all the way through, and then turns outright disturbing at the end.

I can’t say I completely understood this one, but I enjoyed it, although it doesn’t cross the “would watch again” bar to make it into my S tier of movies.

Men is another film that doesn’t really help us hit the Hooptober criteria.
