Hooptober 11 – Hold Your Breath

This month, I’ve been taking part in the Letterboxd Hooptober challenge. The goal is to watch 31 horror films in October, including films that meet specific criteria such as “directed by Wes Craven” or starring a black woman.

I’m posting my thoughts on each of the movies here, as and when I get time.

Hold Your Breath

There’s something evil in the air.

In 1930s Oklahoma amid the region’s horrific dust storms, a woman is convinced that a sinister presence is threatening her family.

My wife and I are both big fans of Sarah Paulson, and we were still trying to scour the memory of Zombeavers from our brains, so we decided to go with something a little more mainstream for our 10th Hooptober movie.

And… it’s a solid movie. Which is what I say when I watch something that I enjoyed, but isn’t really particularly memorable. I’d be getting into spoiler territory if I talk about why it missed the mark, and I hate spoilers So, I’ll just say that there are some good performances, a nice dusty atmosphere and a couple of effectively disturbing scenes, but it’s missing that bit of magic that turns a solid movie into a great one.

This was another movie that doesn’t hit any specific criteria for Hooptober, so at this point we started picking films that did. Starting with… Piranha.
